11. Avery asked: Can executive power be peace power? Due Fri the 9th
Read pages 234-253 in the textbook. Take notes about John Adams' contributions that would support his nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Then begin to compare and contrast all four leaders you have studies in the chapter. For this web log entry write about which of the leaders you would nominate and why?

Even though Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton were great contributions to early American history, I believe that John Adams should be awarded the Noble Peace Price. I think he should get the Noble Peace Price because he was the person who made a powerful friendship with France. There was some tension between the two countries and he did not declare war. To show that he was so determined to keep a friendship with France, two members of John Adams's cabinet were fired because they went against him. That is really heroic because he saved many people’s lives before they are lost. It was also really important that America has allies! Without France we would still be under British rule!
I must say that Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and John Adams all made great contributions to American history, but if I had to choose which one to nominate for the Nobel Peace Prize, I would nominate John Adams. I would nominate John Adams for the Nobel Peace Prize because he was a mediator of an international conflict. When John Adams became president, he had a desire to improve the relationship between the United States and France. Ever since Jay's treaty had taken place, a treaty between Great Britain and the United States, tensions had begun to build up between the United States and France. Not wanting to go to war, John Adams decided not to ask Congress to declare war against France, and tried to reopen peace talks with France. Honest, hardworking, headstrong, and intelligent John Adams refused to change his mind about the war, despite much pressure from members of his political party. Because of John Adams's peace efforts, the United States and France signed a treaty without going to war!
I would nominate John Adams for the Noble Peace Prize. I believe he should be nominated because of his actions as president. He wanted to improve the relationship between France and the United States. U.S. diplomats were sent to Paris by John Adams to negotiate and try to end the conflict between France and the United States.
The French foreign minister wouldn’t discuss a treaty without first getting a $250,000 bribe for himself and a $12 million loan for the French government. The U.S. diplomats were amazed and refused these demands. After John Adams told the Congress that the treaty mission had failed and about the French demands, the Federalists in Congress were outraged. The Federalists in Congress wanted to go to war against France.
John Adams did not want to go war against France. Therefore, he didn’t ask Congress to declare war. He tried again to have peace talks with France. The Federalists did not like Adams’ decision. However, Adams did not change his mind, even though there was a lot of pressure against his decision. Unfortunately, France and the U.S. did go to war. Adams still tried to end the fighting. This is why I nominated John Adams for the Nobel Peace Prize.
All of the candidates for the prize helped America begin a legacy, but I would nominate Alexander Hamilton for the Nobel Peace Prize. Hamilton may seem like the dark horse here, because he is best known as George Washington's treasurer. However, he was much more than just a part of Washington's cabinet. He was the founder of the Federalist Party. Washington and Adams weren't Democrats or Republicans: they were Federalist. At this time, the world didn't practice leader/opposition party split as much as you see today. If America never practiced this, any power-hungry despot could come and easily take over America. The party split stops this because: 1.The person would have to pick a party or be independent{which really hurts his chances}2.He would have to be nominated by his party.3.He would have to win the election. With the creation of the Federalist party and the party split, Alexandder Hamilton helped preserve our freedom, which in my opinion, is way more important than winning it.
There were many good contributions to the history of America but John Adams was one of the greatest. Sure at first he did not appear well suited for presidency but he proved that he was. People just needed to recognize his hard work, honesty, and intelligence. Even thought Adams asked Congress for military support, it was clear to him that war was not the right answer.
He tried to reopen peace talk with France instead of asking Congress to declare war. Adams tried very hard not to have to go to war. He even sent a representative to France to engage in talks to try to end the fighting. Then the United States and France eventually signed a treaty.

There are many good contributions to the history of America, such as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton all made great contributions to American history; I would have to nominate for John Adams. When John Adams became president, he had a desire to improve the relationship between the United States and France. John Adams did not ask the Congress to declare war against France. Despite pressure from members of his political party, John Adams never changed his mind about going to war. Thanks to his determination, the U.S. and France signed a peace treaty. I would nominate John Adams for the Nobel Peace Prize because thanks to him, there was no bloodshed between us and the French.
In the American history there were many great people who helped improve America’s conditions. These leaders were George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton. However, the leader that I think made a great improvement to America and benefited greatly towards following George Washington’s example was John Adams. In my opinion, John Adams best suits the Nobel Peace Prize for a number of reasons.
For example, John Adams had courage. He knew that he was not liked in the South or the West. However, he was hopeful that he would be supported, despite what people thought about him. Adams wanted people to think about his accomplishments, like years in loyal public service.
Another reason of why I think that John Adams should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize is because he knew that he was going to have a difficult reign of power. Since John Adams was the second president, after George Washington, people had high expectations from him. The people adored Washington and his presidency, and as a result, they expected great things to come from the second president. Therefore, Adams had to work really hard and had to succeed in order to please the people, even though part of America never liked him. John Adams realized that and wanted to prove that he would not disappoint the people, so that he could the people’s trust. In addition, people saw Adams as a cold and distant person, even though he was a leading Patriot during the American Revolution and had also served as a foreign diplomat. However, people learned to trust Adams and began to recognize his hard work, honesty, intelligence, and desire to help the people and to reinforce George Washington’s claim when he resigned from office- even people who opposed him. Adams had difficulties while trying to make people see that he was a determined and a hard working person. This proves that Adams is fit to win the Noble Peace Prize Award.
Another example of how the second president helped the United States is that he tried to create peace between the United States and France. Providing a relationship between these two countries was one of Adams’s first goals as president. John Adams sent U.S. diplomats to Paris, France in order to negotiate to end a very important conflict. Since, France wasn’t happy about Jay’s treaty, this country took more than 300 American merchant ships. However, when the diplomats arrived in France, the French foreign minister was not happy about the arrival of Americans and didn’t speak to them. Instead, he sent three French agents to say that he would discuss the treaty only for $250,000. In addition, the French government wanted a loan of $12 million, but the U.S. diplomats didn’t accept these proposals. The peace talks hadn’t been successful. After hearing the disappointing news, President Adams was put into an uncomfortable position by the Congress- to call for war. This war became known as the XYZ affair. Adams never liked wars, so he asked the U.S. to keep a peaceful army, but also thought that the number of ships should be increased to above 30 ships.
Adams worried about this war’s cost, so he didn’t want to fight with France. As a result, he didn’t ask Congress to declare war. Instead, he tried to resolve the situation by reopening time for peace talks with France. Adams was also under pressure because members of his party didn’t agree with him and were stunned by his decision. However, Adams stuck to his beliefs and refused to change his mind. Adams’s plan didn’t work because American and French ships still began fighting each other in the Caribbean. After these news were delivered to John Adams, he sent a representative to France, in order to engage peace talks. Eventually, these two countries signed a treaty.
As you can see, these are the reasons of why I nominate John Adams. I believe that he was courageous, peaceful, and determined. President Adams was not liked and not always trusted by everyone, but proved these people that he tried to protect America and succeeded.
All Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and John Adams made great contributions to our American history. For the Nobel Peace Prize, I would nominate John Adams.
John Adams was a courageous man. He wanted to show and prove the accomplishments to the people. As the second president, he had to work extra hard to impress his people. George Washington was adored and of course, people would have higher expectations on the next. John Adams had to work very hard to stand out from George Washington and it made it even worse when 50 percent of America was against him. He achieved the blessing of America when we realized how hard he tried and the effort he put in.
His first goal as president was that he created peace between the United States and France. However, this did not work out for long. France began expecting very high gifts like money and goods. Therefore, the congress called for a war known as the XYZ affair. he took the war lightly because he did not like war. But it turned out that he put off the war because of the expenses and the risk of losing people. He decided to propose peace. At first, the French did not agree but finally, they signed a treaty.
I nominate John Adams for the nobel Peace Prize because I believe that he wanted peace. he was confident and courageous and that is what America needs.
John Adams contributed many great things to American history as well as Alexander Hamilton, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson. If i were to choose to give one of those former presidents a nobel peace prize, i would give one to John Adams. I would give it to him because he acted as a negotiator to regain the friendship back with France. He didn't want a war between the two countries [France and U.S.] and many people didnt agree with that decision. He kept his decision of not wanting a war persistent even though people didnt like it and the fact that he kept his belief still in mind, to me, he deserves the nobel peace prize
Although Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton made great contributions to early American history, I would nominate John Adams for the Nobel Peace Prize Award. I would nominate him because he made a treaty between America and France. Ever since Jay’s treaty had been issued, France started becoming angry at the U.S. Since, John Adams didn’t want to go to war, he issued a peace treaty. Without John’s intelligence and patient attitude who knows what would’ve happened then.
There were and are many excellent contributions to the history of America, such as Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton are all people who made great contributions to American history; I would to nominate John Adams. When John Adams became president, he had a desire to create or better the relationship between the United States and France. John Adams did not ask Congress to declare war against France. Despite pressure from members of his political party, John Adams never changed his mind about going to war. Thanks to his determination, the U.S. and France signed a peace treaty. I would nominate John Adams for the Nobel Peace Prize because thanks to him, there was absolutely no violence between the U.S. and the French.
I believe that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and John Adams were all great contributors to the good side of the United States. The one that I would choose to receive the Nobel Peace Prize would be John Adams. He “mediated” international conflict. There was tension between France and the U.S. . John Adams made that all better. There could have been a war. He decided to have talks of peace with France. Then France signed a treaty. Even though he was pressured by political members, he decided to make peace. The French minister would not discuss a treaty without a $250,000 bribe. John avoided this and a war. That is why John should receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and John Adams made great contributions to our American history. But for the Nobel Peace Prize, I would nominate John Adams.

At first, the French did not agree but finally, they signed the "Treaty of Paris".
I nominate John Adams for the nobel Peace Prize because I believe that he wanted peace. He came across things the non-violent way.
All four contributors, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and John Adams were very great contributors but I think that John Adams should be awarded. He should be awarded because he had courage. He knew that he was not liked in the South or the West but he still was hopeful that they would support him despite what people said about him. Adams wanted people to think about his accomplishments for example years in loyal public service. I would also nominate him because he made a treaty between America and France. Ever since Jay’s treaty had been made, France became angry at the U.S. Because John Adams didn’t want to go to war, he made a peace treaty.
According to Alfred Nobel, funder of the Nobel Prize, the peace prize is to be awarded to the person who "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding of peace congresses. It is the world's most prestigious prize awarded for the preservation of peace.”
George Washington, the first president, had to face many challenges including the candidature for the first president. Once he became president he started to set up precedents. He created departments in the executive in different areas of national policy. He also set up the federal court system, which he believed would be the key to success of the national government. George Washington signed the Neutrality Proclamation for the U.S. to remain neutral toward the fighting powers, so the U.S. did not help France fight against England. Later on, in 1794, he signed the Jay’s Treaty to settle any disputes that had arisen between the United States and Great Britain. The treaty was unpopular, but Washington believed that it was the most that could be done. Washington also signed the Pinckney Treaty that was dealing with international conflicts between Spain and the US. Finally, he had to take the lead against the Whiskey Rebellion.
As secretary of state, Alexander Hamilton’s biggest challenge was paying off the national debt from the Revolutionary War. He wanted to pay foreign debts immediately and gradually repay the total value of bond. Many people disagreed with the second part of his plan because speculators would make a profit. He wanted the federal government to pay $21.5 million of the $25 million debt. He believed that this would help the national economy because people would spend more time in business and trade. This would make the national economy increase. The South didn’t like his plan so he bargained with them. He agreed to move the nation’s capital to Philadelphia if they supported his economic plan. Hamilton also wanted to pass higher tariffs; he thought this would cause Americans to buy U.S. good and have no foreign competitors. Finally, Hamilton wanted start a national bank where the government would deposit its money. This caused many people to question if the Constitution allowed the Congress to do such thing, but on 1971 President Washington and the Congress agreed with him and created the Bank of The United States.
On the other hand Thomas Jefferson opposed all of Hamilton’s ideas. Thomas Jefferson thought that Hamilton’s plan cheated bondholders who had sold their bonds at lower prices. Jefferson stated the not all citizens might be well informed, but he believed that it was the right of the people to rule the country. Jefferson also worried that Hamilton depended too much in manufacturing and that farmers were most independent voters. He thought that bringing tariffs down would help farmers. Finally, once again, Jefferson disagreed with Hamilton. He believed that Hamilton’s plan gave too much power to the federal government and he, too, believed, as many people, that the Constitution didn’t give the Congress the power to create a bank. Unfortunately, President Washington and the Congress disagreed with him and approved Hamilton’s plan.
John Adams, our second president, had lots of courage. He knew he was going to have to work hard to gain people’s trust especially because he was not liked by the South or West. Adams knew that people had very high expectations for him after the George Washington terms in office. Everyone loved George Washington and how he treated America during his presidency. Therefore, Adams knew he would have to succeed for the U.S. citizens to be pleased and happy. John Adams’ main goal was to improve the relationship and create peace between the U.S. and France. Adams had to send U.S. diplomats to end the argument about Jay’s Treaty. France felt that Jay’s Treaty was favoring Great Britain, so they decided to destroy 300 American merchant ships. However, when the diplomats arrived in France the French foreign minister refused to speak to them. Instead he sent three agents saying that he would only discuss the treaty for $250,000 bribe and a $12 million loan. The diplomats refused to these demands and told President Adams. At this time Adams was very disappointed and was being “pushed” by the Congress to start a war. This came to be known as the XYZ affair. Fearing war he decided to increase the navy to a fleet of more than 30 ships. Adams also feared war cost so he decided not to declare war. However, French and American ships had begun to fight in the Caribbean. Adams sent two representatives to France to engage in talks to try to stop the fighting. Eventually, France and the United States signed a treaty.
From my point of view the four leaders had in common to pursue the well-being of the United States. Washington set up the foundations for a great, secure, strong and free Union. Alexander Hamilton’s main concern was the economy. Thomas Jefferson was also concerned about economic matters but had different ideas than Hamilton. Finally, John Adams showed great courage to run a country that was expecting much from him. He followed George Washington’s steps but did not have it as easy as him since the South and West did not like him. He was very tactful and careful to avoid war against France and he always chose the peaceful ways. That is why I consider John Adams should be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Justin Francis all of the candidates for the prize helped America begin a legacy, but I would nominate Alexander Hamilton for the Nobel Peace Prize. Hamilton may seem like the dark horse here, because he is best known as George Washington's treasurer. However, he was much more than just a part of Washington's cabinet. He was the founder of the Federalist Party. Washington and Adams weren't Democrats or Republicans: they were Federalist.
Although Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton were all involved in contributing to early American history, I believe John Adams should be awarded the Noble Peace Prize. John Adams was in my oppinion a very good presidant when it comes to forighn affairs. He woorked hard to become a friend and aly of France. John Adams was smart enough to know that going to war with France might not be one of the brightest ideas. Although he was pressured by congress, he did not give in. France wanted many gifts that included large si=ums of money, but this still did not tempt him. John Adams persevierd and in th end, France sighned a peace treaty without going to war. If John Adams hadn't done this, who knows if France would be our friends. We could barely handle England in the war for Independence and I'm very sure that France was not any weaker.
Even though Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton were great contributions to early American history, I believe that John Adams should be awarded the Noble Peace Price. I think he should get the Noble Peace Price because he was the person who made a powerful friendship with France. There was some doubt between the two countries and he did not declare war. To show that he was determined to keep the friendship with France, he fired two people in his cabinet that were against him. It was a good thing that America became allies with them because if we didn't we would still be under British rule.
